The European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery exists to enhance, through various means, OMFS standards of training and practice. One of the means to this end is the EBOMFS Assessment, which confers the title of "Fellow of the EBOMFS". The EBOMFS (European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery) RQ (Recognition of Qualification) Assessment has been organized six times during the last 10 years simultaneously with the Congress of EACMFS (European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery) by the Board. Altogether 259 candidates from 14 countries have taken part in the EBOMFS Assessments during the period of 1996 – 2006: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom. The success rate, i.e. the number of candidates who have passed the Assessment and become fellows of the EBOMFS, has been 90%.

The scope of the Assessment has been defined by EBOMFS in the European Guidelines for Specialty Training in Oral & Maxillo–Facial Surgery. This was accepted in the European Board and Section of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery meetings on 8. - 9. of March, 2002. The scope includes history–taking, prevention, examination, treatment and rehabilitation of congenital and acquired pathologic conditions of the cranium, face, mouth, jaws and neck. Acquired conditions can result from disease, malformation, tumour, trauma, degeneration and ageing.

Next RQ Assessment 2008 will be organized in Bologna, Italy, just before the EACMFS XIX Congress. The dates are 8th – 9th (Monday– Tuesday) September, 2008.
